Chelsea Clinton Spoke at IPFW
On Friday April 18th at about 12:50 p.m. , Chelsea Clinton held a Campus Q&A Event in Fort Wayne at the Indiana University-Purdue University in the "Stomping Grounds"on the Lower Level of Walb Student Union before a crowd of about 200 people and five television cameras and a few good reporters including Benjamin Lanka of the Journal Gazette.
Twenty-eight year old Chelsea did an outstanding job as a surrogate for her mother, Hillary Clinton. She was cool, confident, concerned and most importantly, aware of her mother's history and views on issues and she shared them in such a way that the crowd was able to better understand Hillary Clinton.
She said that she had come to listen and answer questions - and that is what she did. She started out speaking to the interests of college students. higher ecucation affordability Her mom increased Pell Grants that are now available in summer to better help students.
One impressive statement was that Hillary Clinton knows dollar for dollar how she will pay for everything. That would be an impressive difference from our current president.
For anyone who cares about real education, she stated that her mother would repeal No Child Left Behind which has been a total failure to our educational system. Hillary Clinton believes that education needs to start earlier and she shared her mother's interest in in helping parents become better first teachers for their children.
She answered many questions from those in attendance, including one about white collar crime. She said her mom would be aggressive in cracking down on crime and applauded Second Chance Programs that encourage rehabilitation.
Other concerns were that when women go back to the work force they often lose medical insurance for their children. While we all hear that there are 47 million uninsured in this country, we seldom hear that there are twice that number that have no insurance for some part of each year. Her mom was the first candidate to speak up for mental and dental health parity. Hillary Clinton voted against Part D of Medicare because it does not really help and there was no negotiated bulk drug buying to lower drug costs and she would encourage laws that help generic drug development. Last, she would provide a way for all Americans to have affordable medical insurance.
Hillary Rodham Clinton would work to prevent outsourcing of jobs and remove tax breaks for businesses that outsource. She has an expansive plan for green collar jobs, and and a strategy to drive down cost of what works.
Chelsea Clinton said that the world was not only angry at the our government because of the War in Iraq bit for many things we have not done that have to do with global warming, energy use and not working as partners to make the world a better place.
Many other issues were covered and we were impressed with they way Chelsea conducted the discussion, how she knew the answers to questions and the policies of her mother. She was an excellent representative for Hillary Clinton's message.
