THE AL CAPONE CELLAR SYNDROME RELIVED!
This morning, we started demolition on the old FWPD headquarters building (Bowser Pump Bldg.). Naturally, in anticipation of a 6 story building being torn down, your thoughts run wild as to what the contents might be. Certainly, there would be some furniture stuffed somewhere from different periods of its 100-year history. You can envision creeping into the huge basement and finding a treasure trove of outdated artifacts from the past, like valves, switches, gates and maybe, old mechanical apparatus.
WELL, YOU’RE WRONG!......(That's good because the dump will get less stuff)
Every desk, left in the building was particle board with Formica tops. Miscellaneous chairs in different states of disrepair and only one (1) wooden table in the whole 6 floors and they glued Formica on its top. There are many doors which will be recycled and there are an awful lot of cubicles with 7-foot windows, 3-foot transoms and a total height of 14 foot tall. Unfortunately, removing these items is the trick. Everything has to be taken apart, carried down the stairway and then loaded. We have a very tight timeline so we must choose carefully as to what we salvage and hope it will be saleable.
I guess you have to remember that when the police Department moved, they took the majority of things for their new offices. I know they weren't pack-rats or hoarders. Any replaced items were given away or dumped. They kept their building in pretty clean shape. I'm sure the Foundation sold off some items too, over the years
The largest and most prominent feature to be rescued is the cast iron, Portico on the front of the building. It is available for $15,000. This includes removing and transporting the piece to your property, within a reasonable distance of Fort Wayne.
