THE AL CAPONE CELLAR SYNDROME RELIVED!
This morning, we started demolition on the old FWPD headquarters building (Bowser Pump Bldg.). Naturally, in anticipation of a 6 story building being torn down, your thoughts run wild as to what the contents might be. Certainly, there would be some furniture stuffed somewhere from different periods of its 100-year history. You can envision creeping into the huge basement and finding a treasure trove of outdated artifacts from the past, like valves, switches, gates and maybe, old mechanical apparatus.
WELL, YOU’RE WRONG!......(That's good because the dump will get less stuff)
Every desk, left in the building was particle board with Formica tops. Miscellaneous chairs in different states of disrepair and only one (1) wooden table in the whole 6 floors and they glued Formica on its top. There are many doors which will be recycled and there are an awful lot of cubicles with 7-foot windows, 3-foot transoms and a total height of 14 foot tall. Unfortunately, removing these items is the trick. Everything has to be taken apart, carried down the stairway and then loaded. We have a very tight timeline so we must choose carefully as to what we salvage and hope it will be saleable.
I guess you have to remember that when the police Department moved, they took the majority of things for their new offices. I know they weren't pack-rats or hoarders. Any replaced items were given away or dumped. They kept their building in pretty clean shape. I'm sure the Foundation sold off some items too, over the years
The largest and most prominent feature to be rescued is the cast iron, Portico on the front of the building. It is available for $15,000. This includes removing and transporting the piece to your property, within a reasonable distance of Fort Wayne.

David Gerlock I'd love to have just a piece of the woodwork from the second floor where the squad room was. I spent almost 15 years of my life going in and out of that room. So many memories are there. I lived a life long dream in that building.

Jerry Vandeveer David Gerlock Does it make a difference which room it is from?

David Gerlock No, it all looked pretty much the same throughout the floor. Just having a piece from that floor would be owning a piece of history to me. Yes, it was once the Bower Pump corporate headquarters, but the history part to me is the years it was the police department. As I said, it was a part of my life for a long time. Ever since I was a little boy, I wanted to be a police officer. Then one day, I was and all of my years were served in that building. When it comes down, it will be like a part of me has died. Very sad it couldn't be saved.

Janice Kinsey I cleaned in that building before the Police Department took over. I loved the huge marble staircase with the foot worn steps. I think it is sad that it has to be demolished. I wish Fort Wayne didn't tear down so many old buildings.

Wendy Burgette Quinn It's sad that the building wasn't taken care of and became so dilapidated that it couldn't be saved.
