DEMOCRAT TOMMY SCHRADER: Yes, I was made aware of his appearance on 21Alive news today. I applaud 21Alive for giving coverage to all candidates, no matter how untraditional and unconventional they may be. Does Schrader have a chance to win? Yes. Is it a good chance? Frightfully---yes. Why? Because the Schrader name is associated through Northeast Indiana with the Schrader family of businesses, such as Schrader Auction, Schrader Real Estate, Schrader Oil, etc. Because Schrader gets spotty news coverage that keeps his name out there. But probably most importantly because of PBS’s decision to not host a Congressional debate this year. To PBS – Really?? The one year that people would be most likely to tune into your debate because of the kind of election year it has been and because of Schrader, that is the year you decide to cancel the debate. People who don’t know Schrader—are likely to vote for him. People who are die-hard Democrats are likely to vote for him. People who claim they are religiously devout to the pro-life should vote for him---as he is genuinely authentic to the core in that one area of his life. And now, thanks to 21Alive’s soundbite—people who would vote for Trump are likely to vote for candidates who openly support Trump, like Schrader. Just when you thought this year’s three-ringed circus couldn’t get stranger or more surreal??
DEMOCRAT BRIAN THORTON: 21Alive quoted and recorded Brian Thorton as stating: “…"Candidate Schrader brings a different voice than I think what Fort Wayne and Allen County is used to. I'm looking forward to supporting him," said Brian Thornton….” And folks, all I can say is --- I don’t know what he is thinking. You know, Thorton ran for City Clerk last year and got booted from the ballot. In fairness, he moved outside of Fort Wayne and was no longer a resident. (But for the record, I agree the whole hearing was hinkey---especially since the star witness essentially perjured herself at the behest of a certain attorney. And to that attorney---I have an audio of the hearing. If this had been a legal matter and not a political matter, I would have turned you over to the Indiana Judiciary for disciplinary proceedings.) I believe Thorton tried to get on the ballot in 2014 for the Clerk of Court race, but wasn’t a registered/voting Democrat and party leadership wouldn’t give him a due pass like they did with the nearly half dozen 2015 candidates. I share these things because Thorton publically endorsing Schrader is likely either an attempt to get back on the Democratic Party or, alternatively, is an attempt to set himself up as a non-establishment candidate for future political races. Or it could that Thorton is trying to demonstrate what a “good” and loyal Democrat he is---as that’s something the party likes to throw out at candidates or would-be-candidates who think for themselves and don’t follow the herd. What I do know is that Thorton has a rather interesting, albeit somewhat checkered, past. [1A][1B][1C] But again, at the end of the day, with regard to the Schrader congressional candidacy—I don’t know what Thorton was thinking???

Schrader claims he's adamantly against abortion, and he says he's trying to turn over a new leaf.
"I'm trying to tone it down, I got my hair done. Famous Hair, my mom gave me a gift card, so I'm trying to spruce up my image a little bit."
Schrader lives in the Coliseum Inn Motel on the eastside of town.
If he wins November 8th, he'll get a new address hundreds of miles away in Washington.
Over the last several years, there've been some election results that would give him a little bit of reason for confidence.
In the 2011 Fort Wayne city elections, Schrader won the Democratic nomination for a council at-large seat.

Marching to a different drummer: Schrader plows ahead in Congressional race

By Jeff Neumeyer

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21ALIVE) --- On the countdown to Election Day in November, most candidates for office are busy meeting with voters, mailing ads and raising cash.
That's not the case with the Democrat running for northeast Indiana's seat in Congress.
His campaign is not following the standard script.
Tommy Schrader is anything but conventional.
The summary below his picture on Twitter, reads, “Just a hard worker, drinking beer and running for Congress."
"It's like, what is normal? You know, it shouldn't really be about drinking beer or personalities, this is about issues," Schrader said.
He rode a city bus downtown to meet with us.
He's unemployed; he collects Social Security disability pay.
As far as a Congressman's salary-- about $190,000 a year-- he doesn't mind admitting that he could use the money.
He is the Democrat nominee in the 3rd District race, but aligns himself with Republican Presidential hopeful Donald Trump.
But election officials booted him off the fall ballot when they learned he'd recently lived and voted in the Green Bay Wisconsin mayoral race.
He pulled off a surprise again this past May, winning the party's nomination for Congress.
"I'm a very happy camper and I want to thank the people of Fort Wayne, Columbia City, Kendallville, Auburn and everywhere in between for voting for me,” Schrader said May 4th.
When I asked him if he thought he would win, he replied matter of factly, “No”.
His own party leaders aren't in his corner.
But that's not the case with all Democrats.
"Candidate Schrader brings a different voice than I think what Fort Wayne and Allen County is used to. I'm looking forward to supporting him," said Brian Thornton.
When we approached Dane Leitch for his opinion, he said he thinks Schrader is par for the course in 2016 politics.
"We kind of have precedent for that on the national level right now, with the controversy there (Donald Trump), so there are all sorts of ways to get the party nods I guess,” Leitch said.
Even if he comes up short, he can say, unlike me and probably you, he once upon a time got his name on the ballot in a run for Congress.
Check that one off the bucket list.
Schrader is an overwhelming underdog to Republican State Senator Jim Banks in the 3rd District contest.

Candidate for mayor ruled ineligible by election board

Dave Gong The Journal Gazette

One Fort Wayne mayoral candidate has been ruled ineligible for the ballot in this year’s municipal primary election.
At the end of a two-hour meeting Wednesday, the Allen County Election Board upheld a challenge to John Roberson’s candidacy for mayor of Fort Wayne. The challenge alleged that Roberson was ineligible to run as a Democrat because he voted in the 2014 Republican primary election and did not obtain a letter from Allen County Democratic Party Chairman John Court certifying his candidacy on the Democratic primary ticket.
Beth Dlug, Allen County director of elections, said the election board’s records show that Roberson did in fact vote in last year’s Republican primary, and she said there was no record of his having submitted the required letter when he declared his candidacy for mayor.
“Primarily based upon the voting record issue, I think we’re compelled to uphold the challenge, because that’s a very strict standard,” said Thomas Hardin, chairman of the Allen County Election Board. “Either you vote in the most recent primary of the party you seek to be a candidate of, or you get a letter from the county chairmanâ ¦ If you don’t have that, then you are disqualified per statute.”
Roberson can file an appeal to Wednesday’s decision in Allen County Circuit Court within 30 days. Roberson was not present during Wednesday’s hearing and could not be reached for comment.
Roberson was one of 10 municipal candidates who received challenges to their ballot eligibility, though he was the only one the board ruled ineligible.
Citing lack of evidence, the board denied the challenges to eight of the other nine challenged candidates. The following candidates will remain on the 2015 primary ballot: Mayor Tom Henry; Republican mayoral candidate William Collins; Democratic mayoral candidates Tom Cook and Rick Stevenson; Daniel Lobdell, Kevin Brown, and Tommy Schrader, who are all candidates for the at-large seats on the Fort Wayne City Council; and Rusty York, Democratic candidate for City Council District 4, who is also the city’s current director of public safety.
Brian Thornton, a Democratic candidate for Fort Wayne city clerk, was also challenged, though the hearing for his case was postponed until noon Feb. 25 to give Thornton time to seek legal representation.
The allegations challenging Thornton’s eligibility are largely similar to those filed against Roberson – namely that Thornton has not voted in any previous Democratic primary election, nor did he obtain the required letter from the county Democratic Party chairman.
“Today, with the approval of the Allen County Election Board my candidacy was allotted one week to properly prepare for an attorneys claim that my candidacy should be invalidated,” Thornton said in an email.
“Thousands of Allen County democrats were granted a reprieve today on an attack from my Party of which I am a part of. We will prepare a reasonable and clear case to demonstrate that this candidacy is valid and should continue without the meddling of County Chairman John Court.”

Hi David- I hope you are having a nice Wednesday. I help with many races up and down the ticket. In the race in question, 1) I challenged a competitor to create first on ballot placement. 2) I secured a cd3 endorsement. 3) I secured an IDP endorsement. 4) Speaking positions were offered and taken advantage of across the district. 5) Call lists were generated for the candidate targeting D households. 6) Press releases were done. 7) Social media was shared. He didn't win, which is not good news. We have many other races to help with into November. I announced publicly that I would not be running for election next year on April 16th at the CD3 Dinner and also in a letter that went out in the winter. I will finish my volunteer CD3 job term which expires in March
X
Im sorry im hard on our party leadershio- like in the "godfather"- its not personal ist just business/politics.
as you may be able to tell- I like you- you are a nice woman a nice person; and all. (not THAT WAY of course)-
BUT-
I suppose after the way the Allen dems and the Journal gazxette and Ns media have been crappy to ME- a NAVY VETERnwith a couple medals (woo hoo)- an two college degrees-Its no fun being the "Rodney dangerfield" of local politics.
A local "commentator/activist- has a contrary view- about access to party resources- and party support.
I have given up trying to get any useful city/ countyprecinct person lists from MY own precinct and the surrounding 1 or 2 square miles- ( IPFW vicinity)
so anytime i can well- be a royal pain to our own local "royals; i enjoy it.
The Henrys are criminals- they operated illegal gambling machines ' tax evasion on tose revenues; wire fraud( the generic felony); and so on.
Cindy henry has been a PESTILENCE to me ever since oh- 1995/1996 when i turned Democrat- ( im a moderate centrist fiscal conservative/ social liberal generaly)- so GOP or DEM- either that im in agreement with.
WHICH IS WHY IM BALLISTIC on JIM "WANKS" and his pro lifer zealot nutjob wife; and all of them.
YOU all arent doing a good enough job of teling the truths about tommy schrader- but let ROACH do one tiny thing; and all you all are all over me; party media; etc.
like the dems have always had a problem finding even a warm body(except schrader ROBERSON; TOM COOK - to fill ballots by the filing deadline- it isnt rocket sciene.
again cindy henry- theyhad several weak or il fitting liberal socilist candidates who cant win in this district with all the KOOKS here.
and thats anECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ISSUE TOO- RFRA; PENCE; THE STATEHOUSE.
SO- Ill post your "rebuttal; if you say so- that you DID TRY- but as YODA SAYS- THERE IS NO TRY ONLY DO.
have a great day-
WE NEED TO START CIRCULATING A PETITION DRIVE FOR AN INDEPENDENT DEMOCRAT FORCONGRESS- DRAFT SOMEONE- RECRUIT SOMEONE- SOWE ARENT STUCK WITH A CHOICE OF JIM WANKS AND TOMY THE "DRECK" SCHRADER.
Jack Morris said "oh ill take the blame ; but weill he take the "bullet" figuratively speaking?
and ditto for CINDY HENRY?
ok like i said, carmen; its not personal; its just politics.
keepthis CHANNEL OPN- I have a cool photo of a GIANT NAVISTAR TRUCK with TRUE BLUE EMBLAZONED ON ITS SIDE ( as big as the one on your ass teehee).
hey im really not a bad person; im just rabid about politics like some foks are rabid about their sports. and this costs us money- plitics.

Unlikely candidate captures 3rd Dist. Democratic congressional nomination

By Jeff Neumeyer

May 4, 2016Updated May 4, 2016 at 2:46 PM EDT
  Powered by Translate
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21ALIVE) --- The man who will be running for Congress from this area as the Democratic nominee will not have the blessing of the party's leadership.
53-year old Tommy Schrader doesn't fit the standard congressional candidate profile, but it seems he meets the short list of requirements to run for the important office.
Local Democrat leaders were hoping for a different primary winner in this race.
Schrader is pumped about beating out two other challengers in voting Tuesday.
The Allen County Democratic Party chairman says it's his fault Schrader will represent the party on the November ballot.
We caught up with Schrader on South Calhoun Street downtown around noon Wednesday.
He was wearing his Green Bay Packers cap, drinking a beer.
He lives at the Coliseum Inn hotel on the east-side of Fort Wayne.
He filed his candidacy with the secretary of state's office in February, fulfilling one of the few requirements necessary to qualify to run for Congress.
"Very happy man, I'm a very happy camper, and I want to thank the people of Fort Wayne, Columbia City, Kendallville, Auburn and everywhere in between for voting for me," Schrader said.
When we asked if he thought he was going to win, he replied matter of factly, “No”.
"There are very few requirements. For example, you do not have to be registered to vote to run for U.S. House of Representatives. In addition, you don't have to be a resident of the state of Indiana to run for any district within our state," said Zachary Klutz, a Republican member of the Indiana Election Commission.
Klutz says, you could be a convicted felon from New York and take a stab at a seat from northeast Indiana in Congress.
With no requirement that you gather a certain number of signatures from registered voters to run, like is the case with a U.S. Senate contest, he maintains it's the easiest office to qualify to run for, federal, state or local.
You need to be 25 years of age, have been a U.S. citizen for 7 years prior to the election, and file your name on time with the Indiana Secretary of State to be eligible, that's it.
It will be Schrader against Republican Jim Banks for Congress in November, even if some Democrats find that a little embarrassing.

The unconventional Congressional candidate: 1-on-1 with Tommy Schrader

Tommy Schrader won the Democratic bid in the U.S. 3rd Congressional District race

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Tommy Schrader clinched the Democratic nomination in the 3rd District Congressional race in Tuesday’s primary. Wednesday was a day of celebration for Schrader.
“Drinking a couple of beers to be honest and if you don’t like that don’t vote for me,” Schrader said. “I had a smile because I had a feeling I was going to win.”
But who is Tommy Schrader?

Tommy Schrader
Tommy Schrader

“Tommy Schrader is an honest guy that wants to work for a living. He’s a hard worker,” the man running for Congress said.
Shrader claims to have a viral video on YouTube and loves politics. He has made runs at several other offices, and said he has been on the ballot for eight different races. He described himself as a conservative Democrat who is pro-life, supports raising the minimum wage and supports LGBT issues.
“It’s in my blood,” Schrader said about his political ambitions.
Schrader is a Fort Wayne native. He went to Snider High School before dropping out after his sophomore year when he said he developed a mental illness. He later got his GED and studied politics at the Anthis Career Center. He’s worked in a library, as a poll worker and a volunteer at the AIDS Task Force. Unemployed today, he said he’s trying to get an apartment so he can move out of the Coliseum Inn in Fort Wayne.
“It’s kind of hard to manage money when you smoke and you drink beer and hotel rooms,” Schrader said. “I’d like to get an apartment.”
In his free time, he said he likes to read, study politics and hang out at his favorite spots around town.
“I like to hang out at Pint and Slice and Ziffle’s Rib Bar,” Schrader said.
Pretty much just a regular Joe, according to Schrader.
“We pay our taxes, we don’t cause any problems and have a couple of beers. I smoke cigarettes. I know it’s not good for my health but I’m not some prude or homeboy that doesn’t do anything but watch TV all day long,” Schrader said.
Schrader said he is hoping to move from his room at a motel to Washington, D.C.
“So one of my goals is to win the election and frankly make $189,000 a year wouldn’t be bad at all you know,” Schrader said.
He will face Republican candidate Jim Banks in the General Election this November.

  • Gina Burgess It's true. Tommy Schrader was arrested as reported very briefly on WANE-TV last night by Alyssa Ivanson. There's a reason that the story was only briefly reported....Schrader, who has a broken leg and an injured arm from about a month ago, found his way to GOP Headquarters last night. Now, I'm not sure how a medicated (pain killers), injured, homeless man was able to secure transportation to GOP HQ last night. (Even if he secured a ride on a Citilink bus....that would be an incredibly long walk to GOP HQ from the bus terminal, and on an injured leg.) Regardless of how Schrader got to GOP HQ, the fact is....somehow, he felt "welcomed" there. Now why would a Dem candidate feel welcomed at GOP HQ? I could speculate on this but I won't. Why? Because other Dem candidates have been made to feel quite at home at GOP HQ. Schrader's being made to feel "welcome" was just a ruse to use this man, to treat him as a living breathing object for potential ridicule. As soon as Schrader was no longer of use to those in the GOP who made him feel "welcome," then he was disposed of. No, you won't see a lot of coverage of this matter.

BUT he had no cast- must be a miracle- 30 days- and healed? halleluyah! THEN he admitted to Wane TV- that he had too much to drink; and maybe he got out of hand. SO-evidently schrader was drinking; over the legal limit- to the point of intixication- YET- no breathylyzer test? ( i assume free beer to all in attendance- theres not enouhg free beer in the world for me to drink with tea-publicans; nor- at Democrat HQ- waaaay out in TILLMAN - thats almost to the airport for me..LOL)
  • David Legalize Marijuajuana Roach AND LASTLY ( at last! whew! lol...)- with all the smart phones out there- why no camera phone footage; or 15,21,33 news cameras- with schrader being led out of GOP HQ by the police; or being questioned by the FWPD on the sidewalk; and put into the squad car? SO we have a farily big political news story- where a political candidate for CONGRESS- FOR GODS SAKE!!- is taken awya by police from a political PARTY party? - where he was plausibly overserved? ( which is illegal under i assume the proper catering license? THERES A WHOLE KETTLE OF FISH TO INSPECT HERE- use of police cars for TAXI SERVICE? why not calla taxi for the drunk? (intoxicated subject)- what was his actual BAC? and are BLUE LIGHT TAXI SERVICES available to everybody? or just VIP'S? AND LAST- even a taxi driver- has to keep a log of his FARES- so- why no public police report? incident report? after all- TIM PAPE- was "shocked; shocked"- that **I** would dare suggest not enforcing ( weed) laws- yet not a peep from his smarmy face either? Nor the GOP chairman( well- we all know shine..)- and again- NO TABLOID SMART PHONE CAMERA FOOTAGE? hmmm. ok- goodnight!

NEWS FLASH-
http://wane.com/news/local/schrader-wants-recount-after-close-race/
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Tommy Schrader ran against two other democratic candidates for the Indiana’s 3rd Congressional District nomination. Justin Kuhnle won over Schrader by 83 votes, causing Schrader to look into a recount.
“At first I wasn’t going to do it,” said Schrader. “But I think I owe the people who voted for me, make sure there were no mistake.”
Schrader said he was made aware of some provisional ballots that still needed to be counted. That’s why he said he wanted a recount.
This isn’t his first time in the election spotlight. Schrader has run for numerous of offices, but his most notable run was for an at-large seat on the Fort Wayne City Council. In 2011, he won the democratic nomination, but it was discovered that he resided and voted in Green Bay, Wis. Since he didn’t follow the residency laws required to run for office, the Allen County Election Board ruled he was ineligible. Schrader fought that decision in court, but the judge ruled that he didn’t file his paperwork correctly and had to dismiss his case.
Schrader told NewsChannel 15 that he hasn’t filed the paperwork to start the recount, but said he’ll be hiring an attorney and will be filing in the coming days.
During Tuesday’s election, he spent time at the Allen County Republican Headquarters as the votes were coming in. He was nearly arrested after being told to leave the headquarters for causing a disturbance.
“It was fun, exhilarating, and maybe I had a couple too many to drink,” he said.
The democratic candidate will go against Marlin Stutzman in the general election in the fall.

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Will Tommy Schrader be on the November ballot for a seat on city council?
If it's up to one circuit court judge the election board's decision to remove Schrader from the ballot, after he admitted to moving to Wisconsin, will stand.
The Democratic Party covered all their bases by first going to the election board and then going to court to ensure Shrader is removed from the ballot.
Schrader's lawyer says you must go through the court system in order to remove him.
The judge disagreed and dismissed the case.
The attorney for the Democratic Party, Jack Morris says, “I believe the statutes are clear that the place for this in the circuit court, and I believe there are specific statutes that say the provision for contesting that election are in the circuit court."
Tommy Schrader says, “The Democratic Party doesn't win elections for people that win elections. I won the election, and I'm going on to beat John Crawford so we can have smoking in bars and restaurants again."
In the primary, Schrader won one of Allen County's nominations to the council's 3 at-large seats.
The Democratic Party wants to replace Schrader with 4th place finisher George Guido.
Schrader says he will continue to appeal the decision.

The elusive Tommy Schrader?
WANE-15 is reporting that Democrat Tommy Schrader is missing and further…
[...] But no one seems to know where he is, or who he is. His party has never seen or spoke to him before.
The following video is from February 18, 2011, when Schrader changed the race he’d filed in originally, the City Clerk race, to the City Council At-Large race.  This was the deadline for filing and this footage was shot shortly before that noon deadline.

The reporter of the current story, Aishah Hasnie was not at the Election Board that morning, but rather another reporter was.  A new reporter to our area, I might add.
I do feel there were a couple of facts or questions omitted from the story, or at least I feel they’re omissions.
First, how does one get on the ballot for either party without that party’s knowledge?  I’ve heard more than a few times, stories of Allen County Republican Party Chairman Steve Shine signing off on a candidate.  In fact, this was much talked about in regards to Tom Freistroffer’s run this year as a Republican, when in the past he’d run as a Democrat.  Perhaps the Democrats do it differently?  It would have been an interesting question for Kevin Knuth – any comments Kevin?
Second, the story made no mention of the fact that Schrader filed for the City Clerk race on February 3, 2011, then withdraw from that race to file in the At-Large race on the 18th.
Third, the story makes no mention of the fact that Schrader ran in the 2010 3rd Congressional District race against Dr. Tom Hayhurst.  In that race, Hayhurst took 5,003 or 86.69% of the vote while Schrader picked off 768 votes or 13.31%.
