MOMENT OF SILENT AND PRAYER: Before I share all of Saturday’s fun events, I’d like to ask everyone to take a moment of silence and say a prayer for our community’s street homeless, especially those who are Veterans. It seems odd, but is very true that just yesterday we were honoring, thanking and celebrating our Military Veterans on Veterans Day (November 11th). Meanwhile, as time passed and November 11th became November 12th, our street homeless population, which includes countless Veterans, were subjected to freezing (32 F) and below freezing temperatures last night. The street/veteran homeless endured these freezing and below freezing temps for 8 hours, lasting from 1 am to 9 am—which subjected these individuals to hypothermia, colds, the flu and who knows what else. Over the course of the past few years, the local street homeless have been subjected to two major injuries by the City of Fort Wayne: (1) the consistent failure to open up emergency warming shelters when temps drop to freezing (32 F) and below freezing, and (2) the repeated “evictions” that result in the loss of personal property, currently being negotiated in response to a federal class action lawsuit. For more information, please readhttps://www.facebook.com/GinaMBurgess/posts/10210862676827791. Also, if so inclined and/or interested, please read about this year’s first “Cold Blue Alert” of the 2016/2017 winter weather season:https://www.facebook.com/GinaMBurgess/posts/10210862244456982. Thank you for taking the time to pause and pray! May each of you have a wonderful weekend!

A MOMENT OF SILENCE AND PRAYER FOR NATIONAL HOMELESS * VETERANS * DAY: Today, November 12th, is the first day of National Hunger & Homeless Week, previously known as National Homeless Awareness Week. [1]
Yesterday, November 11th, was Veterans Day, a day to honor those men and women who have valiantly served our country in the armed forces. On November 11th, the City of Fort Wayne took the day off “in recognition of” our Veterans. Instead of just giving Veterans in City government the day off they deserve to be recognized---the entire city government shut down.
On November 12th, the City of Fort Wayne hasn’t scheduled a press conference nor are they hosting an event “in recognition of” the start of National Hunger & Homeless Week. The City isn’t interested in bringing awareness to the local homeless situation, updating the community on the improvements made to the lives of the local street homeless population, nor will there be any discussion of whether there will be any warming shelters from November 1, 2016 through October 31, 2017 as there had been in the past, right before and during the 2015 Mayoral re-election campaign. Sadly, the City has chosen to ignore the brutal fact that a significant number of the area’s homeless are military veterans---as in those people the City of Fort Wayne shut down “in recognition of” yesterday only to completely ignore them today.
Worse than being “recognized” when it’s convenient or beneficial to those in charge and worse than being ignored when it’s an inconvenience or there is no benefit, our homeless veterans---along with the rest of the area’s street homeless population---is sleeping outside, on cold hard ground, with no bonfires or fire pits to keep them warm, no off-duty police officers to provide security, no readily available private property to openly pitch their tents, no port-o-potties conveniently made available should nature call, and this is all happening while the outside temperature is at or below freezing (32 F).
Nationally, 1 in 10 homeless individuals are military veterans. They heed their nation’s call to duty, volunteer to engage in combat and auxiliary (non-combat) positions to best serve the security and economic interests of our nation, only to come home, be promised benefits that never matriculate or never fully matriculate, often finding themselves deep in debt, in foreclosure or having lost their home while away on active-duty---ending up on the streets trying their best to survive. For all their service, courage and valor, they are stripped of their dignity, their humanity, and basic survival resources all while enduring the scorn, ridicule and disdain of a public too quick to judge, too eager to dispose of, and too self-centered to care.
Tonight, our street homeless, including many of our military veterans, are sleeping outdoors in freezing (32 F) or below freezing weather. [2] Because of the duration of this first freezing spell, 1 am to 9 am--They are being put at risk of hypothermia among other things. It’s sad and heart-breaking to think that in less than 12 hours, our community has gone from honoring, thanking and celebrating our Veterans to putting some at them at risk of hypothermia and generally ignoring their needs.
I’m respectfully asking everyone for 60 seconds of your attention--- 60 seconds of silence and/or prayer.

CODE BLUE ALERT -- DAY 1: On November 12th, 2016, outside ambient temperatures hit a low of at or below freezing (32 degrees) for a period of 8 hours, from 1 am to 9 am. Image time stamp is 12:38 am, November 12th, 2016. No cold weather shelter notices have been issued. No cold weather shelters have been activated. No cold weather shelter has been made available to the public.
Our street homeless, including our homeless veterans, will be outside in below freezing weather for a period of 8 hours, from 1 am to 9 am EST. This means they will be susceptible to hypothermia. Hypothermia occurs when the normal body temperature (98.6°F) drops to less than 95°F. Exposure to cold temperatures causes the body to lose heat faster than it can be produced. Prolonged exposure to cold will eventually use up the body’s stored energy. The result is hypothermia, or abnormally low body temperature. Hypothermia is most likely at very cold temperatures, but it can occur even at cool temperatures (above 40°F) if a person becomes chilled from rain, sweat, or immersion in cold water.
